Question:

How do you tip a parking valet for an extended hotel stay?

My husband and I are in a Waikiki hotel for 2 weeks with valet parking only. Parking fee is $18/day, which is $252 for 2 wks! That's a lot of $$ for us (we got the hotel for $50/night from Priceline). We're not really here for leisure, but for his one-month rotation in the U of H. Are we supposed to tip every single time they park or retrieve the car for us (which is at least once a day)?

My husband told me that he doesn't see any other people tipping the valet. When he tipped someone at one time, he said the attendant seemed surprised. I know the correct etiquette is to tip the valet, but how often and how much when you're staying in a hotel for an extended period of time?

I was thinking of leaving the tip in an envelope on the last day, but is this appropriate, and if so, how much?

Thanks for your help.

  1. Check with the front desk, or better yet just ask the valet what the standard is.

  2. Yes I would give him a one off tip at the very end. If you want to do it in person then just say "thanks for your help, we appreciate it" and give him a nice smile. If you want to put it in an envelope and leave it at reception or something just put a little note inside with similar words.

    Enjoy your trip!
