  1. When I took my cruise they told us exactly how to tip....they left envelopes with instructions on exact amounts expected, which I think is standard. Of course we left extra, but that's up to you. Have fun on your cruise!

  2. after the cruise when u pay for other expenses like go to the desk and ask them they'll give u an envelope and u give cash to the room guy, waiter, and more

  3. it is true that many cruise lines will impose a gratuity charge per person, per day to your credit account onboard.  You will settle this at the end of the cruise.

For those who do not, please check with the websites for each and you'll find this information.

You can find nearly every ship afloat at this website

As a general rule, the following is recommended by the largest cruise vacation experts.

    Tips on Tipping

    Cabin steward

$3.00 to $3.50 per person per day

    Waiter

$3.00 to $3.50 per person per day

    Assistant waiter

$1.50 to $2.00 per person per day

    Bartender, wine and deck stewards

    10-15% of the bill

    Maitre d'

$5.00 to $10.00 tip for each special service

  4. Because tipping practices vary from place to place, most lines will deal with that in their brochures. Some lines automatically add it to your daily charges. On the more traditional lines the steward collects your envelope on the last night of the cruise. Cruise crews are all very service-oriented and should be taken care of by the passengers. Not a definitive answer, but that's how it is. Enjoy.

  5. You can either pay when you check in, or before your ship docks with envelopes for the employees.

Although there are recommended costs for tips, does not mean you have to pay what is recommended.  Pay what YOU feel you want to do.

  6. on Carnival they start an account, link to your credit/debit card, and they charge the tips to that, $10 a day per person, if you wish you can have this charge removed, but I would never do this, the staff more than earns it!

most other lines have a similar plan

  7. On Royal Caribbean they gave you two options. You were given the options to fill out a form authorizing them to charge the recommended tip amounts to your cabin. This we did not do because it would have paid a bit more than we were prepared and some people on the list did not deserve what they "recommended". Also if you had a head waiter or assistant waiter that was horrible you'd be paying them the recommended tip when they didn't earn it. On the last full day at sea they should leave you envelopes labeled with the parties you should tip. Head Waiter/Maitre d', Main Waiter, Assistant Waiter and Room Attendant. We felt the Head Waiter/Maitre d' did nothing but walk by and say hello, so he was not getting the recommended $20, he got $10 instead. Our travel agent recommened $50 for the Main Waiter and Room Attendant and $25 for the Assistant Waiter. We budgeted those amounts and gave those amounts. You can give more or less as you please. If you never used the sit down dining room, I would skip the Head Waiter, Main Waiter and Assistant Waiter tips alltogether. You give these envelopes with the cash in them to the person as you see them that last day and thank them for their service. Now, we also had a Drink Conesiur who catered to our alcoholic drinking needs at dinner. He was excellent and courteous. He was not part of the envelope package. You can slip him a $20 or add $20 to the final bill as a tip. We did this for our Drink Conesiur and our favorite bartender at the one club we enjoyed the most. A note on tips. Each thing you buy thats a service item has a gratuity automatically added. You cannot remove this tip and its 15%. This tip always goes into a large pool to be divided amongst all the staff. Now if you give Joe at the bar an extra $20 that does NOT go into the pool, Joe gets the whole $20.
