  1. That's not how it works.

A breeder uses leg bands (that's what they are really called) to differentiate between one of his birds and another.  If you knew who the breeder was, he could look it up in his notebook.

But a leg band isn't like the license plate on a car.  The leg band by itself doesn't tell you enough to be able to trace the bird.

You would be far better off going to the person who sold the bird to you.  If you got it at a pet store, they may or may not be able to tell you who the breeder was.

If you found a bird and want to trace the owner, the leg band will be useless.  Put up signs in your neighborhood.

  2. Normally you can't.  Some small time breeders of smaller birds have their names on the bands, but generally the leg bands are just for the breeder to keep track of the birds hatch date, cage, parents, vaccines, and pet store they were sold to. The bands are bought in boxes of normally  100 to 500, and they all have different numbers. Some will have the initials of the state, others will not. Different sizes can be different colors.  An open band (one that is not continuous) is a sign that the bird came through quarantine at some time.  This happens when someone brings their bird here from another country.  The US does not allow importing of live birds any more.  Please read my profile.

  3. Here is a yahoo group that can search your ban numbers and help you find the original breeders.

    Good luck
