How do you trade or gain access to the many markets of special securities? click to read details please.?

Question

for example, how can a hedge fund trade subprime mortgages? One of my Merril Lynch advisors told me that mortgages can be packaged up and sold to investors.... but how? where are these markets? how do you access them?

In addition, how many other types of securities are there? where can I obtain a list? How can i trade them?

For those who are savvy in financial matters and theories and such, how do SIDs and other financial acronyms fit in to this?
