  1. to do what?  varies from cattle prods to formal in-class instructions.   it depends on what is to be taught, and how fast/well it needs to be learnt.   it also depends on who is being taught, and what abilities they have.   the military use a simple systematic approach, from the ground up for everyone, so no-one gets left behind.  others do not have that time & money to get results, (or have better students?)  Teaching is an art, an effective teacher is priceless.

  3. When I was trained, they gave me books and manuals to read through, as well as the railroad's rulebook. They walked me around and showed me what the basic mechanisms are and how they work, and they let me ride with some of the crews so I could observe protocol and what not. That's how I became a conductor, anyway.

My engineer's certification is another story, since I already knew a good amount by the time they started training me. I had already learned how to work the air, and I knew what all the other controls did. So they basically put me in the seat and gave me time to practice. Different engineers gave me tips and advice on train handling, like how to make couplings and how to keep the slack out when you're running on the main. My instructor would take over as conductor, and he was always throwing wrenches in gears and seeing if I would pick up on it. He'd tell me to pull a cut from a siding, and he'd leave a handbrake applied somewhere in the middle. If I didn't feel it within a certain distance, I failed the challenge. It's tedious sometimes, but you sure learn how to move a train.
