Hi, does anyone know how to translate "upon hearing..." or "upon leaving..." into Spanish?

Like: Upon hearing the news, he screamed.

Would it be something like "por/sobre oido" or "por oir", but I'm really just guessing here? Thanks!

  1. upon hearing= al escuchar

upon leaving= al partir, al salir. Example, "Upon leaving the party, she fainted"= Al salir de la fiesta, ella se desmayo".

"Upon hearing the news, he screamed."

means "Al escuchar la noticia, el grito"

or "Al escuchar la noticia, el pego un grito".

  2. Upon is a preposition and in spanish its equivalent is "luego de "

So upon hearing is "luego de escuchar", upon leaving is "luego de abandonar/dejar".

Upon hearing the news, he screamed is "Luego de escuchar las noticias gritó"

  3. Sobre Oir - Upon Hearing

  4. 1) Al * infinitive: al oír, al salir

    2) Tan pronto como/así que/en cuanto + Past tense (these indicate an inmediate action after anothe one)

    3) Luego de/después de + infitive (luego de oír, escuchar, salir...) is used just to express a action that ocurs after another one.

So, 1 and 2 (an INEDIATE ACTION) and 3 and 4 (just an action after another one.

  5. You use "al" + the infinitive:

al oir la noticia, se marchó a casa - on hearing the news,he went home

cerró la ventana al salir de la casa - she closed the window on leaving the house

Te lo daré al llegar - I'll give it to you on arrival/when I get there.

Unlike the English expression, the construction does not have to have the same subject as the main verb: -

Al morir su madre, se marchó a la ciudad - he left for the city when his mother died.

"Luego de", suggested by another answerer, means "subsequently to".

Hazel Eyes' answer is just plain wrong.
