How do you transpose a video from the UK to work in a video player in the US?

My daughter bought me a video, on ebay, from the UK. It won't play in my video player. The picture doesn't come on and the voices go to fast. Is there somewhere I can take it, to make it work right? And maybe have it put on a dvd? An answer to my problem would be greatly appreciated.
