  1. Your doctor can prescribe you a medication called allopurinol. I work at a nursing home/rehabilitation center and some of my patients swear by eating cherries when they are having a bad gout attack. We get them a jar of cherries, they eat them and in a matter of a day or two the inflammation is gone. The best treatment is prevention and that would be to us the allopurinol daily per MD order. Hope you or whoever has the flare up feels better soon.

  2. gout? ouch, i feel for you. first you need to control flare ups with diet, then as far as i know medication!!

  3. Drink lots of plain water & take a teaspoon of bi-carb of soda (baking soda) in a glass of water  once or twice a day to reduce urea blood  levels. Its the same stuff as the expensive gout treatments u buy from the store but real cheap. Wear thermal therapy socks to improve blood circulation & heal pain. Stop drinking alcohol & avoid rich foods.

  4. The natural remedies include:

    • Apple Cider Vinegar – one way to take this is by boiling the apple cider vinegar and adding rose hips.  Once cooled, the mixture is gently dabbed on the area affected by gout.  This should be performed several times per day for as long as the gout attacks continue. It can also be helpful in preventing gout attacks as it is thought it changes the pH level of the blood so that instead of forming crystals, uric acid is simply expelled in the urine.

Apple cider vinegar can also be taken with meals. Try mixing two teaspoons of vinegar with two teaspoons of raw honey in a glass of water.

Many people find that soaking a foot or joint affected by gout in a mixture of half a cup of apple cider vinegar and three cups of hot water can help alleviate pain during a gout attack.

    • Celery Seeds – medical botanist formerly of the US Department of Agriculture, James Duke Ph.D recommended celery seeds for quick and effective gout relief as they help to eliminate uric acid from the body and act as anti-inflammatory agents.   Supplements of 450 mg to 500 mg of celery seed extract can be taken daily. However, pregnant women and people with kidney disease should avoid this remedy, as the plant has diuretic properties.

Another method is to boil celery seeds in two cups of water until soft, and then strain the seeds from the water, drinking one half cup of the celery water four times a day.

    • Cherries – eating six to eight fresh cherries every day is one of the easiest and most pleasant ways to relieve gout symptoms.  Dr. Ludwig W. Blau first reported this remedy in 1950, having discovered the gout relieving properties of cherries firsthand.  If fresh cherries are not available, canned or frozen cherries are an alternative. The antioxidant properties of cherries act as an anti-inflammatory and enzymes in the cherry neutralize uric acids, helping to combat gout before it starts.  Eating cherries between meals is the best way to get the most benefit from their helpful properties.

    • Quercetin – this is a flavonoid that helps to prevent the production of uric acid in a way similar to many of the prescription medications that are used for gout treatment. By taking 1000mg of Quercetin with 1000 to 1500mg of the bromelain enzyme (which enhances absorption), two to three times every day between meals, inflammation and uric acid production can be effectively reduced.

    • Red Clover – this herb is very effective for eliminating toxins from the body, such as excess uric acid.  As uric acid is expelled, the risk of a gout attack is minimized and the symptoms of a current attack can often be relieved.
