How do you trim roses?

I have 8 wonderful rose bushes but i think I'm hacking them. They do not seem to be getting bigger.

Live in Zone 11 tampa fl.

  1. Actually Rose Bushes are mainly trimmed around late December and early January....after that they begin to bloom nicely in spring. If you trim them now, they wont really grow.


  2. Are your roses blooming?  When the flower is past it's prime it is time to cut it off.  Go down to the first set of leaves that have 5 leaves and cut it off just above that set.  

  3. Roses like to eat...a good systemic rose food (Bayer, every 6 weeks) they like the sun but do not like their leaves to stay wet. Banana peels are a great source of natural potash. toss around your rose bushes (great for all blomming plants) several times a year, cover peels with mulch or dirt.When trimming old blooms off, go to the 1st group of 5 leaves cut at an angle just above the leaf group ( does not have to be the first group of 5 leaves) a group of 5 lower on the stem is ok.Always keep old blooms trimmed off.
