  1. Click Start Run.  Type msconfig.  Windows configration opnes up.  Click the start up tab.  Disable the programs that you don't want run on start up.

  2. That question requires more time than allowed here. Really, you'll need to adjust your power settings (screen brightness, wifi, hibernation, standby, etc.) to get the most out of your battery. If you're looking to save actual processor work and want to stop services, and you're using Windows XP/Vista (which I assume you are), you can Run->MSCONFIG, under the StartUp tab, edit which programs startup and which don't, but you may want to have a knowledgable person do that, as you can stop  essential programs that you use that way.

  3. Stomp auto-starting programs. Click Start > Run and type "msconfig" at the prompt. Click the Startup tab and look at all that junk that loads when you launch your PC. Do you really need "Adobe Reader Speed Launch"? Probably not. Turn off anything else that looks useless, but be careful not to disable your anti-virus and important system components.

This will increase your computer's performance but will not help your battery to last longer.

  4. Down in the start bar at the right of the screen where all the icons for the running programs are, go there and right click on the program that you do not want. Click close or shutdown(what ever it will say). That will stop the program from running. If you restart the computer, then it will start again. You can completely turn it off but that is a advanced setting and if something is messed up in that window, your computer may not run properly again.
