How do you use *69 on the phone?

a lot of people tell me that after someone has called you, you can dial *69 and it will tell you the number that just called. I've never actually done it, but it sounds good because although my family has caller ID, the phone screens are really old, and you can't read it anymore. so, i was wondering a few things about it.......

do you do it right after the person hangs up? how long does it last? do you just press *69, or do you have to dial *69?

plus, does it only ever tell you the number of the person who last called? or can it tell you more?

any info. would help! thanks! :)
