And what in your opinion is the best free one out there for Vista 32 bit?

I am taking my second course of C++ programming class. Last class I had no problems logging on to the schools Sun computers remotely. But this semester I am having problems trying to edit my files. We changed servers and now I can't edit it. My instructor said I need to run a X terminal emulator. And I have never used one. Can someone tell me how or send me to a website that tells me how? I connect to the school through SSH Secure Shell.

  1. I'm assuming since you said SSH that when you log on to the server, you get a text-based interface (no GUI).  So you should see if the server has a program like nano or joe - these will allow you to edit your files in the text-based SSH interface.

Running an X terminal emulator seems like it would be complicated and/or very slow in this situation - you might want to ask your teacher for the name of the program he/she uses if you can't figure out anything else.

If you need an SSH client for windows, I personally like Bitvise Tunnelier.  PuTTY is another option.  Either of those clients will also let you edit your files using a program of your choice, then transfer them to the server.
