I recently obtained a drift sock for my bass boat, but I have no idea how to use it. The instructions that came with it just further confused me. Can someone please explain how to use this useful device???

  1. Just attach it according to the instructions, and toss it out on the side of the boat that the wind is coming FROM.  It will slow the drift of the boat considerably.  They really take some getting use to, so be sure to have it well away from the motor before you fire it back up.

  2. Watch in large seas as if used off the stern the boat can be swamped>As the wind will push the boat the way it's blowing & the current will push the boat the other way>> So be safe in the usage>

  3. I'm assuming you are not taking your bass boat into any heave seas:

    - Make sure you have the end of the rope securely tight to the boat.

    - As far as I know there is no point of running the motor when you have your drift sock in the water, so make sure your motor is not running.

    - Just toss it in the watter.

With the drift sock in the watter your boat will follow more of the watter current than the wind.

  4. Most people like to tie it midships.

Toss it into the wind, and let it fill as the boat drifts down wind.
