How do you use a texture on photoshop cs3? when i do it, the texture never blends in?

for example, if i want to make a black background look old, and i have a .jpeg format texture with stains/scratches on it, what do i do?

  1. Have you tried the various Blending Modes PS offers? They should do the trick.

    If your texture is on another layer, use the Blending option of that layer (in the layer window/panel (whatever it's called in english). If you use "Pattern Overlay" in the "Layer Style" you can do it there too.

    Change the option where it says normal.

    NOTE: A black background is usually not that easy to change properly. I tried with a red pattern and only "Overlay" and "Soft Light" got me a nice result. With the black background as top layer, btw. Also play around with opacity a little.

    With the pattern on top "Hard Light" and "Linear Light" worked pretty much the same.

    Playing around a bit with these options (Blending Mode and opacity) usually gets me to the wanted result.

    Also using the pattern layer twice (or even more) can give nice results...
