How do you use the F12 button on a macbook without turning the volume up?

I need the F12 button for a game but every time I try to use it, the volume just goes up.

Go to System Preferences and select "Keyboard & Mouse". Click on the "Keyboard" tab. and mid-way down the panel there's a check-box labeled "use all F1, F2, etc. function keys as standard function keys". Check it.

While this is enabled, you will need to press the 'fn' button in the lower left of the keyboard while pressing a function key in order to use the key's special function.

Also, if you usually use the function keys' special functions, then leave the box unchecked. You can press the 'fn' button while pressing the function key and use it the other way.

Press the fn button on the bottom left of your keyboard while you are presssing the F12 key, ie. the fn key should be already pressed when you use the F12 key.
