  1. There is a cue ball at top right. click on it and place the x where you would like to hit the cue!

  2. Volumes have been written about the effects of English and how to apply it.  It's just not something that can be answered in this format.  I would strongly caution you against getting all carried away with using English.  It's actually something that too many players overuse.  It's definitely something you need to know to be a complete player, but you'd be surprised at how well you can do using only the vertical axis of the cue ball.  I define English as sidespin imparted onto the cue ball by hitting left or right of center.  Draw and follow are types of spin, but I don't use the term "English" to refer to them.  Make sure you're not putting the cart before the horse.  Best of luck.  M.D.-BCA Instructor/Referee.

  3. Hitting the cue ball below center will impart a back spin to it, so it will stop or even bounce back away from the target ball when it hits.

Hitting above center will create a "following" shot --- the cue will have a tendency to follow the target ball. (Can be dangerous).

Side English will impart a spin to the right or left when it hits the target ball (or a rail, of course).

How forcefully to impart the English takes practice. Most of the spin will be expended on long distance shots before it contacts the target ball, so more force must be used.

Two really good books to get ahold of are "The Science of Pocket Billiards" and "Upscale Nine-Ball", both by Jack H. Koehler and published by Sportology Publications.

Have a blast with your game....

  4. To put backspin on a ball, hit the cue ball below the center of the ball.

To put forward spin, hit the cue ball above the center of the ball,

To put left English, hit the cue ball to the left of the center of the ball.

To put right English, hit the cue ball to the right of the center of the ball.

    I hope this helps.

  5. English is backspin. When you use English it just means that you are going to tap your cue under the center of the white ball and make the ball spin back to you when it hits the target. This can be advantageous when you want the trajectory of the ball to trail of in a specific direction or even stop at a specific point on the table so that you are lined up for your next shot.

Had to add: Applying top spin is called -"Follow", Bottom spin is called "Draw" and side spin is also called - "Masse",  Try to research an purchase a training ball -(Jim Rempe Training ball) and you will learn a lot about english.

    Good luck...

  7. You use English to get position on your next shot object ball. You must be certain that you make the shot you are on or position won't make any difference. Practice Practice Practice.....

    Good luck and have fun.
