How do you verify if a taxi is safe in Tijuana?

Even though it may seem like a hastle, try calling the main taxi services before ever boarding one. Or, to be safe anyways, call ahead for a taxi. And always travel with a partner or group and let people know where you are going and have some sort of designated spot to meet later.

It is best to call for a taxi from a service.  My husband, who is Mexican, and I always call for taxis in TJ.  If you get a driver you feel comfortable with, see if you can get his number so you can call him directly if you are going to be in the city awhile - sometimes they do this.  (I say "he" because I have only seen one female taxi driver in 8 years of living in and visiting Mexico.)

If you can't call, at least verify that the person in the car matches the ID they carry in the taxi with their photo on it.  And always sit in the back.  Best to travel with other people and during the day.  

You can also try to take the bus.  Not as nice as a taxi, but possibly safer than jumping into an unknown taxi.  Mexico is great, but don't take unnecessary chances (especially in Tijuana).
