  1. It's really difficult since you invest in it emotionally. But it can be done. First you must look at the work as if it is not your own.

When critiquing my art, I ask the following:

    • How's the composition?

    • Is there balance or not?

    • Does it pull the viewer in?

    • Or does it take them on out beyond the frame?

    • Is there a focal point or not?

    • Is it chaos or calm?

    • Does it do what it was intended to do?

    • Are the colors working to convey the feeling and tone of mood I wish to communicate?

    • If I'm using text, are the fonts true to the message and emotion? Are they legible? Are there typos? Does the message make sense?

    • Is the work impactful or subtle? Does this communicate well with the overall message of the image?

    • Is the work self-indulgent or have I created something relevant and fresh?

    • Is there something that works well? What it is it?

    • Is there something that doesn't work? What is it?

    • Am I relying on tricks (computer stuff) or am I working well within the scope of my talent and skillset?

    • Do I believe what I see?

  2. Put yourself in the place of the patron if you like what you see chances are so will they.

  3. Ask yourself ( honestly ) if you would buy this if it was done by anyone else, or you could get others to view it for you so as to get a unbiased opinion & if you know one, get someone involved in the art world to take a peek at it.
