Question:

How do you wax a skimboard and ride one?

I'm a complete beginner lol. I tried it at the beach but the shoreline was too sloped and the waves were rough that day. Does anyone have any tips on how to wax the skimboard (it's a local motion) thorough explanations please =) I'm using warm water/Tropical wax from Classic Wax Sticky Bumps. Is this ok? How and when should I clean the wax off of my board?

Also can you include some tips on riding a skimboard properly and how i can improve my balance? How far should i throw the skimboard on the surface and when? How should I land on the skimboard for maximum success of not falling off terribly lol..

Please be specific and include lots of info! Feel free to add more than what I might've forgotten to ask...And maybe helpful websites that i can use.

Thanks!

  1. To ride your skimboard you must grip it with your right hand on the rear of the board and your left hand on the upper-left edge of the board (unless you are "goofy" footed because then it is the exact opposite).

Wait until the water is about 1 1/2 inches deep or shallower and then slide your board onto the surf.

Catch up to the board and quickly place your left foot on first if you have a "goofy" stance, and right foot on first if you have a "regular" stance.

Find your balance and glide across the water

When you slide your board you should throw it pretty fast so that you have momentum.

  2. trust me im ok...i started last week and im starting to get into the waves..first of all if you have a carpet in your house practice there..it sounds weird but that's how i learned to catch my balance...i have s*x wax and i rub the entire board...go in a circular motion all over the board...also when you have rough waves look at the back of the next incoming wave and see if you have a big wave forming...i do that so that i don't crash into the waves...also when you're a beginner try to come back to the part of the shore where its just wet and dry then when the wave reaches your foot like just when it stops to go back just do a slow jog and drop the board slowly and get on like you do on a carpet...then just learn to keep your balance and if a big wave comes then just walk off the board but push it away with your foot...trust me you don't want a wooden board to hit you in the shin...OUCH. then as you get better start jogging a little faster and also you have to I'mmediately drop the board just about half a foot in front of your foot and then immediately hop on...as light as you can..from the back because the side will make you turn and you might fall backwards or hit the wave backwards...that has happened to me...i have plenty of rashes and scratches on me...some burns and wrist pain...and im 13! if this helps you please add me.

  3. all i have to say is "its not as easy as it looks", i tried for the first time last weekend, i failed miserably

  4. yep sticky bumps is good you can try s*x wax to just rub it on side to side then top to bottom until you can rub your hand along it without it slipping cleaning it off isnt really needed you want to jump on the skimboard right after you throw it and if youre a begginer throw the board when the waters going back into the ocean

skimonline.com has a lot of good stuff

and to get the wax off your board leave it out in the sun for a couple of hours then you can wipe it off with a rag or towel
