How do you wear a hakama?

I practice Iaido and I just received my hakama. The trouble is, I take ages in the morning to fiddle with it and even still, it is worn incorrectly. Does anyone know how to put one on correctly?

The right way.

put on the front side

and then tie around your body

then make a knot on the back

then put the tab from the back inside the loops

then pull the back straps forward

and tie in a bow

and there you go

but dont forget your iaidogi before the hakama

and maybe your obi

This is how we tie on a hakama, iaido-style:

You'll need a belt (obi, made of thinner fabric than a karate/judo Belt) that's 3 times the lenght of your waist plus some extra for a double knot.  Put the obi on first.

- Step into the hakama with the back plate at the rear, position the hakama on your hips.

- Take the front of the hakama and pull it up to the middle of the obi. Take those ribbons above the belt to the back, then cross/cinch them and take them back to the front below the top hem of the hakama. Now make a single knot (reef knot).

- Take the backplate (back of hakama) and pull it over both rear hakama knots. Insert the plastic spoon-shaped disc into the rear of the obi. Now take those rear ribbons around your body to the front of the hakama, looping one of the ribbons around the front hakama knot. Make another reef knot. You should now have two long ribbons hanging down the front of your hakama.
