i've always wanted to know, and what exactly is it?

when you make a new discovery or a great achievement in physic, chemistry,medicine,literature,peace and economic.Each year the respective Nobel Committees send individual invitations to thousands of members of academies, university professors, scientists from numerous countries, previous Nobel Laureates, members of parliamentary assemblies and others, asking them to submit candidates for the Nobel Prizes for the coming year. These nominators are chosen in such a way that as many countries and universities as possible are represented over time.

The Nobel Prize isn't a single prize but a collection of prizes for different disciplines: chemistry, physics, literature, peace, economics, and medicine.

The exact qualifications are different for each discipline, but I think the general rule is for the candidate's work to have benefitted humanity. One prize may be awarded to several people at once, if they all took part in the prize winning research.

Laureates have to give a presentation over their research/ work, and are awarded a medal and cash prize.
