  1. Very carefully, ... and you probably shouldn't.

Halogen lamps/sockets operate at a much higher

    temperature than standard incand. units.

Commercial units are carefully tested to limit both

the temperature of the (required), hi temp. wires,

and the external surfaces of the fixture.

Rewiring a fixture not designed with this in mind for

halogen lamps can result in a dangerous unit.

Even using the same or a lower wattage is not a

guarantee of safety in this case.

  2. The lamp is unplugged, first of all!

Then, unscrew the incandescent socket from the top of the lamp, and pry the top part of the socket off so that you can expose the screws fastening the wire connectors. Remove the wires.

Is this for a 120v halogen lamps? If yes, then pull the wire up and find the terminals on the new socket and connect them and then s***w the socket onto the lamp, usually a 3/8" threaded tube through which the wires are fed. Is your lamp a floor lamp? This is a common socket for floor lamps: http://www.mylampparts.com/product_info....

If this is for a low voltage halogen system, then you'll need to pull the wiring all the way out of the lamp. You'l probably have a transformer inline with the power cord from the wall socket and the output of that transformer will go into the lamp, up through the tube and wired to the appropriate lamp socket.

These fittings are all supposed to be standardized so that you can interchange different kinds of sockets, just as you're seeking to do. If you can find a decent electrical supply company (not electronic supply, not radio shack) they will often have bins of lamp parts for this.
