How do you work a rolling engine on a 1990 Pontiac Grand Prix?

I have to change my spark plugs but have no idea how to lift the engine to do that?

  1. The auto parts stores have a special engine holding tool you need. You remove both the "dog bone" mounts at the top and the tool then replaces one mount. You can then tighten the tool till the engine rolls forward enough to access the rear spark plugs. It is a older car so you may have a hard time finding the tool in which case a large turnbuckle from a hardware store will do the same thing.


  2. "Lift" the engine?  Why would you have to do that just to change the spark plugs?  Or maybe I'm just not understanding what you are trying to do.

  3. i know that it is not fun to do that, but you do not have to pull the engine to replace the plugs. you should look into special tools for this but not a engine hoist.  

  4. pretty easy and no you dont need special tools. undo the front two dog bone mounts as another poster said, rock the engine and stick a 2 x 4 between the alternator and the frame of the car. then you can easily get to the rear plugs. works for me everytime
