How do you work out the distance between two places on a map?

I have an exam coming up...and as one of the questions you have to calcuate the distance between these 2 points on the map. e.g It says "Calcuate the distance from Cape Carbon to Manly Island.

How do i work this out?

  1. there is a little mileage key on the bottom of most maps


  2. measure the distance on the map with a ruler, and lets say its 3 inches. You would hold the ruler up to the 'legend' and find that 1 inch equals lets say 1000 miles. Multiply that by three, since the distance was 3 inches, and you get 3000 miles in real life.

  3. check the scale on the map... and measure the distance between those two points... and  multiply the distance by the scale factor...

  4. there is usualy a scale on ths bottom of the mapshowing distance between two points and indicating the milage.use a divider and cover this space and transfer it to the places you need to calculate the distance.Cheers.
