  1. 40 yards / 10 yards = 4 (10 yard segments in 40 yards.)

4.88 seconds (time took to cover 40 yards / 4 (10 yard segments) = 1.22 seconds (time in seconds per 10 yard segment.)

a "/" is the division sign.

  2. An average speed calculation is distance divided by time.

So, a 40 yard dash in 4.88 seconds equals an average speed of 8.2 yards per second.

If your speed was constant throughout, the time for doing 10 yards of the 40 yards is 1/4 of the 40 yard time or 1.22 seconds.

If you have times for the individual 10 yard portions of the race, you can just divide those times into 10 to get the speed in yards per second.

  3. 40/4.88=2.05 sec per 10 yds.

Just divide the distance by the time.
