  1. 56v^2 - 17v - 3 = 0

    QUADRATIC FORMULA: (-b + / - sqrt(b^2 - 4ac)) / 2a

    a = 56; b = -17; c = -3

    (17 + / - sqrt(17^2 - 4(56)(-3))) / 2(56)

    (17 + / - sqrt(289 + 672)) / 112

    (17 + / - sqrt(961)) / 112

    (17 + / - 31) / 112

    48/112 or -14/112

    3/7 or -1/8

    Or, you could just factor.

    56v^2 - 17v - 3

    56v^2 - 24v + 7v - 3

    8v(7v - 3) + 1(7v - 3)

    (7v - 3)(8v + 1)

BUT if you ask me, the quadratic formula is easier.

  2. 56v^2-17v-3=?

Factoring we get (?x+?)(?x-?) let v=x

First find the factors of 56v^2 and -3 to get the middle term -17.

We know 56 factors to 8and 7 and 3 is 3 and 1. Need to look at the numbers and combine by multiplying then subtracting to get the middle 17; looks like 8*3-7 = 17

Now put these numbers behind the right signs based on the middle term's sign which is negative. So the larger number will be the negative

    term.

    (8x+?)(7x-?)

    (8x+1)(7x-3)

Sometimes trial and error works best....

  3. equals 0

  4. 56 = [56,1][28,2][14,4][8,7]

    -3= [1,-3][-1,3]

    (8*-3) + (7*1) = -17

    (8v +1)(7v -3)
