  1. Step1 If the catamaran has completely inverted (turned "turtle") the first task is to raise the sail so that it is parallel to the water. If the catamaran is not fitted with righting ropes, cleat the mainsheet and pass the long end of the mainsheet towards the front of the catamaran, inside the shrouds.

Step2 Tie off the mainsheet around the front crossbeam.

Step3 Stand in the diagonally opposite corner on the rear crossbeam, and use the mainsheet to hold yourself up. Lean back while pulling on the mainsheet. The natural forces will eventually weigh down the rear corner while lifting the opposite front corner. This leverage action will eventually "turn and lift" the catamaran, dragging the mast to the surface.

Step4 Once the sail is parallel to the water surface, visually inspect the rigging for damage before proceeding. In addition, visually examine the surrounding area for approaching vessels or swimmers.

Step5 If the vessel is fitted with righting ropes, loosen off the rope of the hull that is out of the water. If the catamaran is not fitted with righting ropes, cleat the mainsheet and pass the long end of the mainsheet towards the front of the catamaran, inside the shrouds, tie off on the front crossbeam of the raised hull. Tie off the very end of the mainsheet on the rear crossbeam of the raised hull. This will produce a length of rope to act as a righting line.

Step6 Hold the righting line in both hands, and while standing on the lower hull, lean backwards. The further "out" you can lean, the greater the leverage to right the catamaran. Further leverage can be obtained by positioning the boat so that the prevailing wind will fill the sail as it is being righted.

Step7 The leverage action will eventually lift the mast clear of the water. As the boat rises and come back to the surface, you will in a position "under" the catamaran. To prevent the catamaran sailing off or blowing over again, reach for the rear crossbeam as the catamaran surfaces. This will place the crew in a clear position free of spars and fixtures.

Step8 Once righted, the catamaran will eventually turn into the wind. Visually inspect the rigging and sails for damage. Release all tied ropes before proceeding
