  1. 日本 (kanji)

    にほん or にっぽん (hiragana)

    ニホン or ニッポン (katakana)

  2. There are lots of ways to say Japan in Japanese. Some like 大和 ("yamato") are rather old and literary and are not used very often that much except in books, movies, etc.

Probably the two most widely used words today are 日本 ("nihon") and 日本 ("nippon"). They are written exactly the same way in kanji so it can be very hard to know which is being used when. Often, the only way to know for sure is from experience and the context in which the word is being used.

In romaji, both words are written as (1) "nihon" and (2)"nippon". In hiragana, they are written as (1) にほん and (2) にっぽん. They can both be written in katakana as (1) ニホン and (2) ニッポン, but most of the time katakana is not used.

There is another way to say "Japan" in Japanese and this is a Japanese pronuciation of the word "Japan".

"Japan" is not a word of Japanese origin so it is treated like just any other foreign word and written in katakana as ジャパン and in romaji as "j(y)apan".

The Japanese don't really use this word to refer to their country but it is used sometimes treated as a proper noun for things like band names, product names, etc., etc. It's like a slang expression.

  3. In Japanese, it is pronounce as either Nippon or Nihong

    For Nihong

    Kanji - 日本

    Katakana - ニホン

    Hiragana - にほん

    For Nippon

    Kanji - 日本

    Katakana - ニッポン

    Hiragana - にっぽん
