    I think that is Avagadro&#039;s number, by the way - but the whole point of scientific notation is that the first number is always between 1 and 10.  

    To do this properly it should be 6.02214197 * 10 ^ 23.

    Count how many times you&#039;d have to move the decimal point to get it from where it is originally, to where you want it, and that is the exponent for 10.

  4. Scientific notation must always be in the form a * 10^n, where 1 &lt;= a &lt; 10.  Therefore, you don&#039;t write 60,221,417.9 * 10^(16), you write:

    6.02214179 * 10^(23).

    This is the correct expression of the number in scientific notation.

    As shishkani noted, this is in fact Avogadro&#039;s number, which you usually memorize as 6.02 * 10^(23) elementary particles per mole of substance.
