    X for X chromosome

    y- for y chromosome denoting that it's a male

    Xy matters because hemophilia is s*x- or X-linked disease. It takes 2 recessive genes (h) for a woman to become a hemophiliac, but only 1 for a male since they have a y instead of an X chromosome.

    y chromosome carries little genetic material compared to X and it does not carry genes for hemophilia.
