How do your record whole tv shows on Tivo?

i got a tivo, and i started to record soemthing

i thot that it would record the whole show, but it only started recording from when i clicked on the record button

is this supposed to be happening because my friend's tivo recorded the whole show?

and if it isnt, how do you record the whole show?

How can you record something your TiVo has not even seen. It will only record from the time you click the button. Unless you go into the guide and find a show you want to watch and click record. Than it will record form the start to the end.
