  1. You should type in teh name of a school, and search for a site that gives you an overview of the school. There is a really nice site out there, but I can't seem to find my way back there until I don't actually want to.

  2. Do a search using the campus name or the school distirct's name.  Your state may also have an accountability website.

This site may be helpful, too: http://www.greatschools.net/

  3. Narrow your search down to a few schools your interested in and go on to the Ofsed website.  You will be able to read their latest Ofsted report which focuses on every aspect of your chosen school such as overall teaching, learning, and school ethos.

You can also look on the BBC website which has league

tables for all primary and secondary schools in England.

There you will find where a chosen schools position is in the league and which are value added or most improved.

There are also scores for english, maths, science and  attendance.

    Good luck!

  4. type in the name of the school your thinking of sending your child too they may have  a web site most schools do have a look at there ofsted report for that school that gives you a good overall view of how well or not well the school is doing

  5. If you are looking for a preschool, check to see which school your friends suggest. Do you want the school near home or near your work? Affordability.  Then when you narrow down your choices, make an unannounced visit to check them out.  Is it clean? Are the kids happy? How does the staff interact with the kids?

If you are looking for a public school, first determine which school's attendance zone you live in; in some districts that offer 'choice' you can find out if the school is in a cluster with other schools that allow you to choose a school in that cluster and provide transportation (if you choose a school outside the cluster, you will need to provide the transportation). Does your child know anyone at the school? Having friends at the school is an advantage. Visit the school during the school day and ask the secretary if there is someone who can give you a short tour of the school--often the principal will show you around and explain their program. Stick around for dismissal and try to talk to some of the parents as they pick up their students as to why they choose that particular school.

http://www.greatschools.net/  rates schools, but the rating doesn't tell you everything, neither do the parent comments on its site since anyone can say anything about the school.  Realize that when you look at the school's grades that it often takes only one child's score to give the school a lower rating, so don't go by the state rating alone. This rating is based on the results of a test given each year--test results don't always give you a true picture of the school, its whats happening in the school everyday, not just on test day that is important. Greatschool's own rating is based on a set of criteria it deems important. If your child is a second language learner, would he do better in a school that has second language learners or in a school where no one understands his language?  Do you want him in a school with children of the same socio-economic status or do you want him in a high socio-economic school where he will always be trying to "keep up with the Joneses"? Greatschools gives lower socio-economic schools a lower rating, but these can be some of the best schools....it all depends on where you and your child will feel most comfortable.

Visit the school, but be sure to check in at the office since 'visitors' must sign in for security reasons. Do you know anyone that has children in the school? Do you know any of the staff?

If you are look at a private school you will need to determine if it is convenient or offers bus service, if it is affordable or if they offer scholarships, if it is affiliated with a certain religion or philosophy...you would want a school that agrees with your beliefs. Visit the school and ask for a tour. Do you know the families of any of the students? Do you know anyone on staff?

Do not be afraid to make more than one visit to the school if you need more information. Most public schools adhere to a state curriculum and all teachers must be certified. Private schools follow their own curriculum and the teachers do not always have to have a state teaching license.

  6. Go to the public school website. From there, you should be able to retrieve information such as: the number the school scored on state wide testing. If you can't locate it, ask the school. They have copies of test results.
