How does 'awareness' come about from the brain?

Exactly how dous neurology and brain chemistry translate into a personal awareness of things like feelings etc.

  1. This is one of those questions that an answer would guarantee an nobel prize.  Scientists have spent their careers trying to answer this question for decades and we still have no idea.  If I knew, I certainly wouldn't be telling you.  I would be publishing the results of my research in a prestigious journal and would be waiting for the call from Stockholm.  Meeting the King of Sweden would be fantastic.  I'd have to buy a tux though.

  3. No one knows.

    Of course, awareness could be an illusion. For some reason most people find that possibility unconvincing, but that's because they're suffering from the illusion themselves, so of course it seems real. A bit like hallucinating.
