How does 40 days of mourning work?

I have an acquaintance that their grandmother passed and they are recognizing 40 days of mourning...I want to know; which religions observe 40 days of mourning? What happens during the 40 days besides the obvious mourning? and What can I do to send my condolences for my friend? Her grandmother is Persian.

Its in Islam..the 40th day is called Chehlom

What happen is the close relatives pray for their loved one that their spirit may be peaceful...

For condolences you could say to her..that i hope god blesses her..and stuff like that
