  1. In Carbon Dating scientists measure the levels of the radioactive isotope Carbon-13.  In out bodies the level of this isotope stays constant so when someone dies scientists know how much Carbon-13 there was to begin with.  There is also a set rate at which Carbon-13 decays into Nitrogen being that it is radioactive and going through radioactive decay.  When a half-life is reached that just means that the levels of Carbon-13 and Nitrogen are equal hence half of the Carbon-13 is gone.
