How does Community Service play a role in Collegiate Studies?

Someone once told me that community service plays a role in collegiate studies. Do you think this is true, and if so how?

It doesn't.  Anyone who tells you it does is a complete and total moron.

So I must be against community service right?  WRONG!!

You do community service because it's the right thing to do morally.  It is wrong to not help out in your community.

Morals require a religious base normally.  There are some philosophies that do have a moral code to them, also.  I guess if you are amoral, you might need to find something to justify doing the right thing.  I guess if doing it to "help yourself" makes sense, then better to do the right thing for the wrong reason than not doing it at all.
