  1. In developed nations earthquakes can destroy infrastructure, which is buried in the earth,  With fractured water and sewer lines water supply dwindles and usually what water does get though is not fit for consumption.

In under developed countries, while their is not as much of an infrastructure problem the water table can be affected by fissures that open in the earth and the less than stellar sanitation could again find its way into the water supply.

  2. They break water supply lines and sewer lines then untreated water mixes with treated water. This can cause people to get sick

In areas where there is no piped in water its not as bad because people generally get water from wells. but an earthquake can change water levels and dry up wells.

some of the deep rural areas of China might have sanitation but once again the untreated water might be mixing with clean water and people are then getting sick.

  3. They could break water pipes, or create a large crack in a spot in a river and divert the water.

  4. Broken pipes

    Mixing clean and dirty water

Dead bodies and debris entering water sources

Lifting of water tables above pumps

Lowering of water tables beyond well depth

Diversion of rivers away from areas

Trapping of rivers behind barriers creating lakes and dried up rivers

Breaking lake beds or banks allowing them to drain into rivers or seas
