Right now I am attending a state university and my expected family contribution from fafsa is $0, so Financial aid usually pays for all of my tuition.

Will it be the same if I attend a private college that costs a lot more?

  1. Depends on the private school.  When I was trying to decide between a public and private school, my financial aid packages left me about the same amount of money to pay at both schools.

On the other hand, I picked the private, and now in my second year, tuition has shot up a disgusting amount and my financial aid isn't covering all of the difference, so I might not stick around another year.

But, yeah, a lot of private schools will give really good financial aid.  Don't rule them out automatically.

  2. NO. But why do you want to go to a private college. Save money and get your education. US economy is not doing good anyways and it's a bad time to take heavy loans. What is your major?

  3. I'm going to attend a private school and I used to go to community college, which the government paid for, I never paid for anything and they usually gave me extra grant money. However now my tuition is $32,000 and I have to pay $11,000 out of pocket, the rest the government pays. If you look at the big picture, the private is $32,000 and the community college only cost $5,000 so of course out of pocket is going to be more.

  4. If you're a very good student and can get into a school that meets 100% of need, all costs will be covered although loans and work study may be part of the package. At a handful of very top colleges like Harvard, Dartmouth and Princeton, full need is met with no loans.

At the vast majority of private colleges, however, 100% of need is not met. At those schools you would need to be at the very top of their applicant pool for them to give you enough grants to cover a zero EFC.

  5. not necessarily, fafsa works for both, public and private. The grant will be re-evaluated according to how much help you need.
