How does Hotmail and Gmail earn money ?

When you make an email on Hotmail or Gmail, You don't pay anything so how do they earn money ?? Thank you.

By advertising all around your email when you're reading it.  Gmail even picks up keywords from messages in your Inbox and displays links on the right column of the page that are related to some of the things in your Inbox.  I had an email about buying sheets on Ebay once, and all of the ads there were links to, were related to buying bedding.
