It's pretty effective at relieving congestion, but I'm curious as to the science behind it. Also, what are the consequences of "exceeding two doses in a 24 hour period?"

  1. Good question. Mucinex is dextromethorphan and guaifenesin. Dextromethorphan is a cough supressant, and guaifenesin decreases the viscosity of respiratory secretions to releive congestion.

Since guaifenesin does the same thing on the stomach, taking too much in too small a time interval will irritate the stomach, since thinning the gastric mucous results in increased vulnerability to the stomach acid. Thus, you may become nauseous and vomit.

    Hope this helps!
