Why does it occur? What specifically is happening between atoms during an oxidation state? What formulas are involved?

  1. Because of some quantum effects, each atom wants to have some number of complete shells.  That means 0 or 2 electrons in the first shell, or 0 or 8 in any other.  So, something on the left want to get rid of electrons.  For instance, H wants to be H+ so that it has no outer electron.  O wants to be O= so that it has 8 outer electrons.  In the process of giving everybody what they want, H gets oxidized and O gets reduced, and water happens.

  2. this is the de composition of a material,as a result of oxygen.

the material can be solid, liquid,or gaseous.

different materials will decompose differently, and at different rates.

ie; aluminum in the atmosphere will oxidize very slowly,

and hydrogen gas at high temperature, will decompose very rapidly

    (explosively).

there is an optimum level (mixture) of this decomposition.

  3. a halogen bonds with a molecule or nonnoble element. this makes the electrons in the atom less energetic releasing the difference in energy state in the form of light (electromagnetic radiation.)
