  1. Sildenafil is a  selective inhibitor of cGMP specific PDE5. This reduces the degredation of cGMP in the corpus cavernosum by competitively binding to cGMP receptor ir PDE5.  Thus resulting in more cGMP. However this only works if there is activation of the nitric oxide/ cGMP pathway by sexual stimulation.
