  1. The community reveives the benefit because if someone volunteers that means the business doesn't have to pay an employee thus having to raise the cost of the product or service to you.

  2. The community benefits from your talents and services that are free of charge.  Among the other benefits you receive from volunteering, be sure to track of your volunteer hours and report them on your taxes.

  3. It all depends on what kind of volunteer work you do.  The benefits the community received from my work was free and skilled labor.  I served for two years in a foreign country (Micronesia), and the community never saw a dime besides what they could save from having an extra teacher at the school (I taught English).  What the community got instead was a valuable resource.  The main purpose of my work was to develop a project that would be self-sustainable and easily run by the locals, as well as be relevant to their needs.  For example, I wasn't going to build urinals, because the locals have used the beach for as long as they've been living on the islands.  That's like giving an Inuit a freezer.  They wouldn't understand the point.

If you're thinking about volunteering, go for it!  You might find a passion for something!
