  1. Saying "close enough" is extremely subjective.  It depends on many things - your location, the location of the antennas, buildings/trees in the way, interference from stuff...you get the picture.

Most wireless access-points (the physical box providing the wireless) can transmit between 100 and 500 feet.  Vegitation such as trees and bushes (especially when wet) decrease the signal dramatically.  Also, if there are more, stronger networks around you it would make it harder for your computer to "hear" the wireless you're trying to connect to.  We have a similar problem at work - when we have to take inventory of our surplus (in large metal containers) the wireless won't reach to the far corner of our parkinglot and through the metal trailers.

I think 7 blocks is really pushing the limit if it's not past the limit.  If you see the network listed but can't connect, try setting your computer by a window to see if that's enough to get connected.  Otherwise I'm afraid you're out of luck.

  2. More than likely you are connected to your jobs WIFI, while they told you they do not offer free WIFI, most business are going to have it for the people who's work requires the internet. Move your arrow down to where your 2 computers are and see what it says, usually is will say the name of the network you are connected to. If it doesn't sound like something from your job then you might be picking up something from a neighboring business. It is not likely that you are picking up from 7 blocks away. My WIFI picks up for about 500ft. And I am pretty sure 7 blocks would be more than 500 ft.

  3. Maybe you can formulate the question a bit better?
