  1. By the time the dust settles, it's going to cost you around 3 grand +.  The engine has to be removed & rebuilt.  You can save some money if you can do the re & re.

    Good Luck. . .

  2. contamited( or contaiment/forein material) geting on the bearing surface

you will find out more once the pan is removed

i have seen where the oil pump through out  medal shavings and burned up bearings

sounds like your buddy is a mechanic

a kit from northern will run less then 600 a cam will run another 4-5  and then another 300 in prep(mill/grind)

i would throw another 6-7 for the labor and owe him a favor

and youll be just over 2g

northerrn will combo the cam with the master rebuild kit to give a good deal

or hey go with a shop and pay twice

    goodluck

  3. Lots of reasons, the most common being a sludge buildup that plugs up the crankshaft oiling holes and the bearing runs dry. You didn't mention the miles on the engine but a 98 truck probably has more than a few.

The only right way to do it is painful. Engine bottom end rebuild, and since the heads are off, you might as well do the whole job.

We are talking $2,500 to $3,500 in big bucks.
