Question:

How does a 2.4 kW electrical heater compare to running the gas central heating for a 4-bedroom house?

I have a 2400 W Delonghi electrical heater in my bedroom that I use quite often - usually on the 1 setting [rather than the 2 setting]. My mum thinks that it would be cheaper to put the central heating on for the whole 4-bedroom house than running my small heater! I doubt this very much, but what kind of consumption [in kWh] does an average gas central heating system use up? And is it a lot more than my small heater?

  1. Hi, I guess your logic is correct, if the rest of the house is cold and C/H not running.  C/H boilers will have a kwh rating so you could work out the consumption using that, but there are many variables, generally speaking it is more expensive to heat using electric, but in a smallish confined space with door closed and plenty of hot soup, you should be quids in, lol.  of course your mums theory would allow her to heat up the whole house and then blame you for the cost heheheh.. good luck, gary

  2. Gas is definitely cheaper. I had an all electric home. Started running $300 per month. I started using Butane on regular stoves I bought. Bill probably $50 per month after that. :)

  3. The gas central heating radiator in your room will be cheaper to run than the electric heater.Your mum is exaggerating, but she is just trying to tell you.

    The answer is no.

  4. Gas is more efficient the electricity when it comes to heating, but if you are only heating a small area it will be cheaper to use your electric heater.
