How does a Canadian go about getting an American Work Permit or Citizenship?

I have a Canadian boyfriend who might move to America with me (Texas to be exact). I have two questions;

1. How does one go about obtaining an american work permit or citizenship without marriage or joining the army?

2. Is it really difficult to do?

1) Find an employer willing to sponsor and petition you or work for a company in Canada, which has offices in the U.S. and hope for a company transfer. Citizenship comes much, much later, once you have obtained permanent residency. Neither the H1B or L1 visas are direct routes to a green card.

Boyfriend must have a Bachelor's Degree to be eligible for an H1B.

2) H1B, yes. L1, no.
