  1. Basically a dvr has a built in hard drive and records what you tell it to.

My wife and I have Dish and got the HD Dvr that works for two rooms for free!  It is very easy to setup to record.  We can have it record programs every time they come on (like american idol).  This way if we are out and come home we can watch it.  The best part of the dvr is that Dish has a button on the remote that skips ahead 30 seconds.  You just press this button three or four times and you miss all the commercials!  It rocks!

If you go to Dish check out the 722 receiver.  My wife and I are spoiled by this.  It's very easy to use.  Our bedroom and living room work off of this receiver and both can watch/record what they want.

  2. Hi happyy1,000,000,

A DVR or Digital Video Recorder works like an old VHS recorder except it uses a hard drive instead of tapes. You can then record to a DVD if you want to keep your recordings or you can just play it from the hard drive and delete it when you are done.

All electronics stores sell them. Here is an example from WalMart - http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.d...
