I see them on all the freight trains since the cabosse is no longer used on US freight trains. They flash a bright red, and are atached to the last freight car. Do they send information to the lead locomotive?

  1. They tell us brake pipe pressure,if we're moving or stopped,if the marker is flashing,if a battery powered unit how much battery life is left, and some tell us whether they are moving forward or backwards. We can also send them a signal from the headend to place the train in emergency. The headend unit can also give us fault messages if there is a problem with either the headend or the rearend unit.
