  1. You should find a real estate agent to work with. They will know best.

  2. Where in the US are you looking to buy?  As you know, with the Dollar/Pound exchange, it's a great time for you to invest here.

It is easy to purchase real estate in the US as a UK citizen.  You should contact a real estate agent that works with international clients to help you.  Best of all, the services of an estate agent are free if you're the buyer since the seller pays their fee based on a cooperative arrangement.

See this link to find an international property specialist:

  3. Buying the house isn't hard, you just need to arrange to get the money into a US bank and write a cheque.  Contact a good real estate agent, and they should be able to walk you through the process.

As for living there, that will depend on US immigration.  Even if you are not working, you will still need a visa to stay in the US.  That will require proof of income, a criminal record check, etc.  Contact the INS (Immigration and Naturalization Service) for the details.
